Access (Desktop Application)

Welcome to the Access Desktop feedback forum! This is the place for users to send us suggestions and ideas on how to improve.
We have partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service and your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy, including the license terms. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Please, please hurry and release the 2016 runtime

So many of us publish Access desktop applications for needy users that cannot afford to buy Office products; without the 2016 runtime available to us those needy users must do without. Please help us.

    • Shift F2 Zoom Box

This Shift F2 trick is useful in a number of places: In QBE grid, in Properties sheet, in forms, etc.
      (a) My eternal aggravation is it is pokey in size. Let us control size; when we re-size it, please have MS Access remember the new size.
      (b) Oh please, oh please, make it remember the font and font size we pick to display its data. You will make us older folks HAPPY.

      • Gracefully handle ODBC connection lost failure

Today, when a ODBC connection is lost, we get:
        (For SQL server)
A SQL server login screen which (in my opinion) the user should never see in the first place. He has no idea what to with it.
When/if he cancels, he gets an ugly error message.

We need to be able to:
        A) Handle that failure gracefully WITHOUT showing the login screen.
A++) Be able to reconnect without having to restart the application.

        • Please make Access able to handle more data types as are commonly used in Server databases

For example Access cannot handle BigInt in linked tables. This has been in use in SQL Server for many years, but Access can't handle them in linked tables.

(Apologies for the irrelevant emailed response earlier)

Not too long ago we added support for Large Number (Big Int) – https://blogs.office.com/en-us/2017/03/06/new-in-access-2016-large-number-bigint-support/

We reviewed all the suggestions below and took note of them. I’m going to mark this topic as Done so you can your votes back.
If you’d like to ask for additional data type support, please create new suggestion (one for each).

            Thanks,
            Michal [MSFT]

          • Provide a modern Chart control

Please, give us the Chart control, at least, like Excel has. It's impossible to build an interactive dashboard in Access because of lack of functionality and Win95 look. For example, out-of-the-box BoxPlot chart in Excel 2016 is awesome. Why not Access? Or even interactive functionality like PowerView has.
