  1. Provide a MS-Access connector to PowerApps and Flow

We have a webservice on which we have a PowerApp connector that enables PowerApps to run any macro, vba procedure/function, opening of a form to fill in text-fields and/or perform the equivalent to buttonclick-events in an Access Application. If MS-Access out of the box could configure and enable a webservice on the machine it's running and thus would enable a PowerApp to be a cloudfirst/mobilefirst frontend presentation layer, MS-Access 2019 would really become something new. When the Access application has linked SQL-tables to SQL-2016 or up, it can easily delegate the creation of JSON to SQL-server, but I wouldn't be…

  2. JSON import/export

Given the widespread use JSON as a data transport, we should have:

    Application.ImportJSON

    Application.ExportJSON

    like we have:

    Application.ImportXML

    Application.ExportXML

There are a few libraries out there – replacing these with one or a few lines of code would be extremely useful.

  3. Access database in an inconsistent state...Windows 10 1803 update

Access database in an inconsistent state....since the release of Windows 10, 1803 our significant percentage of our 3500 customers have consistently lost connection to the back-end database and been forced to stop work during the day to repair their database. Only recently did we discover the leasing fix. In the meantime, our product reputation has been adversely affected. Please release a production update since many of the IT people have refused to make the lanmanserver registry entry and are waiting for the Windows update. HELLO MICROSOFT PLEASE HELP!!

We are well aware of this issue and are working closely with the Windows team on resolving it. Although we believe we have a solution to the problem, it introduces some new issues that we need to investigate and resolve before we can deploy the fix.

    Regards,
    Access Engineering

  4. Import/export specs edit feature

Currently, the developer needs to go through the process of importing a file into a database in order to create or edit an import/export spec in the MSysIMEXSpecs table. True, the MSysIMEXColumns can be edited directly in the table, but overall, the process is not very user friendly. There needs to be functionality to create/edit import/export specs without have to pretend that one is importing an external file.

  5. make set_spapprole work in a VBA context

SQL Server (see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/system-stored-procedures/sp-setapprole-transact-sql?view=sql-server-2017) has a great security feature to allow an app to assume a security role when connected to the server. This doesn't work from Access VBA. This leaves us having to give permissions to data that users can subvert. Whilst this can be mitigated, if Access could connect using a user account with no permissions, and switch to an app role with the right permissions security would be wonderful. SetAppRole is particular pleasant in that in the context we still know the original user who started the app.

  6. Add the ability to import selected VBA references in the Import Objects dialog

A frequent task in Access is to import some or all database objects from an existing database into a blank new database. After that, we must painstakingly set all non-standard VBA references in the new database the same way as in the old one.
It would be nice if we could specify in the Import Objects dialog which references should be copied from the existing database into the new one.

  7. Integrate MS Access with Power Apps

I've been looking more into Power Apps, and I think it would be great for you to work with the Power Apps team to provide a web and mobile solution to what Access can do today on the premises of a server. Because there is unfortunately no web version of Access, maybe Power Apps can help solve this problem? Ideally, we should be able to continue moving (and linking) Access data into SQL and then create a Power App on top of the "Access-created" data from SQL; essentially viewing a Power Application that looks exactly like access but online and…

This is great feedback that we are actually working on providing now. Using the comments below, we’d love to hear thoughts about solely focusing on SQL as a stepping stone to Power Apps for data migration purposes, or also investing in another way for you to connect to Power Apps through the Common Data Service (CDS). This database allows you to store, share and manage your data over the web, and eventually the phone (current MS investment). CDS is also Power Apps’ central underlying storage unit, as well as the entire Power Platform team’s key investment.
Please see following link for information about CDS, and let us know: if Access created a data export & linked table capability from our platform to CDS, would you use it?:
    https://nam06.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fpowerapps%2Fmaker%2Fcommon-data-service%2Fdata-platform-intro&data=04%7C01%7CEbo.Quansah%40microsoft.com%7C32c26c86b7fe4f3162a508d7f069896d%7C72f988bf86f141af91ab2d7cd011db47%7C1%7C0%7C637242208373640123%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C-1&sdata=GuvQ6o2aqKiBMs%2B1z2nvv0sNtAHNl8MPQqiOvsh0D1U%3D&reserved=0

We will still continue to make investments in SQL connection either way, but we are also happy to…

  8. ODBC errors need to return more information error 3146 does not provide enough detail

Perhaps an error.description2 property which we can reference which stores the error returned from SQL about the true problem. Right now it is very difficult to trouble shoot.

    Thanks.

  9. Attach SQL tables without "dbo_" or give the option to do so

It would be more intuitive to link sql tables WITHOUT the owner prefix.

  10. Create ACE Engine Redistributable for Access 2016!

Since Office Click-to-Run Installs can result in the ODBC / OLE-DB Drivers for ACE NOT being visible to the system outside of the VDI install environment, we need a CURRENT version of the ACE engine redistributable package (the last one being from Access 2010 - 6 YEARS AGO!)

    For more info see: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2874601

  11. add ETL-features to ACCESS (retry of: Add PowerQuery to ACCESS)

I still do thoroughly hope, you will integrate ETL-features to Access!
In EXCEL as well as in PowerBI you can use "retrieve and transform data" to collect data from diffent sources.
I don't want to write back data to the sources.
Many of my clients - financial controllers and data analysts - use ACCESS as a kind of datamart for their reporting, as I wrote in my BLOG "controllingexcellent". They collect data from different source, mostly TXT-files, CSV, Web, EXCEL-Files and Databases at the same time.
It is the "single source of truth" where data is stored. Many other reports…

  12. Encrypt password in MSysObjects

In a frontend/backend scenario with linked tables to a password secured Access backend the password can be figured out. It is human readable in the Connect field of the MSysObjects table in the frontend. Please prevent this by encryption.

  13. Develop a mobile version of Access so it can be installed on a lightweight android device.

Develop a version of access that can be run on a lightweight android device or an application that can be run from the cloud.

  14. Implement support for (ADO) linking SQL tables and views using Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server

There is only support to use the ODBC driver for linking tables and views to Access 2016/2019 databases. For ADO we need to avoid mixing connection string and database access technologies.

  15. Fx ODBC issue where column name of 64 characters is 1 too many

When the Linked Table Manager sees a column name in a SQL Server table with 64 characters, it only uses the first 63 characters of that column name.

After linking, an attempt to view table data will fail, with the message

    "ODBC--call failed"

    "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server][SQL Server]Invalid column name "'123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123'."

The column name in my table on SQL Server is:

    "1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234"

So Linked Table manager is truncating that for some reason.

There is a 64 character limit for object names.

I cannot find any documentation anywhere saying there is such a limit of 63 characters in ODBC…

  16. Enable Access to work with Azure Multi-Factor Authentication

There seems to be no way of allowing Access to link to an Azure SQL database where Azure Active Directory Multi-Factor Authentication has been enabled. This means that if an IT department switches on MFA Access can't connect to an Azure SQL database it can connect to where MFA has not been activated.

If I have missed something, please tell me!

  17. Fix the TransferDatabase command so that it exports tables to Oracle properly.

When I try to export an Access table into an Oracle database it doesn't retain the input field formats. Everything is converted into a string and the indices are lost. I've contacted Microsoft about this before but got no meaningful response, presumably for petty proprietary reasons.

  18. Enhance Import Fixed Width Text wizard with ability to indicate that first row contains column headings

When importing delimited text (e.g. CSV) one can indicate that the first row contains column headings.
This ability does not exist for fixed width text. It should, to make the feature more useful and consistent.

  20. Extend exporting/importing/linking tables to/from a SQL-Server

I think it would be very nice if ODBC-Connections to a SQL-Server would preserve:
    a) The Primary Key constraint while exporting.
    b) Constraints like default values while exporting.
    c) Extended properties like 'MS_Description' while exporting.
    d) Auto value/IDENTITY while exporting.

And also b) + c) while importing or linking tables.
While a) + d) still works (sometimes) while importing or linking, it does not work in a one to one fashion.

The Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access (32-Bit) is, unfortunately, buggy (or completely broken after v7.3.0) and extremely slow to open even medium-sized databases.

    Once upon a time,…
