  1. data connector sql server

ADD SQL SERVER AS A DATA CONNECTOR - The Access team is currently evaluating the use of data connectors in Access, (https://youtu.be/j5UAv4yY5RY?t=2155), and we need your support to get them to include SQL Server as an option! PLEASE VOTE for this idea, every vote counts!

  2. Provide a native Treeview control

The Treeview control is an extremely powerful way to display related and hierarchical data in a nodal fashion. I have built application for years using the vb Treeview common control. These applications could not be successful without it. There is certain data such as a computer folder and file structure that would be nearly impossible to comprehend without it., However, the non native Treeview require serious knowledge of Access and VBA to use successfully. Also portability has always been a problem. A native control with some features that make binding data simpler (possibly a wizard), would really expand what the…

  3. Incorporate Power BI as an Add-in to New version of Access 2017

Since Pivots & Charts have been removed from Ver 2010 onwards, its been a big problem for us consultants to provide charting and pivoting features to our customers. These are features simply adored by our customers due to their ease of use. But after looking at Power BI I feel since its from the same Microsoft family the Access Team should consider incorporating it in their Next Product Planning process.

  4. Improve Access programmability

There are many new technologies available that Access cannot take full advantage of because it's either in .NET or requires JavaScript.

Excel has a JavaScript API being developed and expanding. Using JavaScript would allow for richer integration between desktop and web apps where appropriate.

On the other hand, native access to .NET framework would provide access to many other components that Access can leverage for automation.

What we can't do is just stay behind in COM world - COM ecosystem is shrinking and we need a solid integration support especially when our Access application only requires a small part to…

  5. Enhance the SQL Editor

Some features would be good to developers:
    1) Tabbed SQL Query Windows - allow user to create a query window without binding to a query object (like we do in SQL Server)

    2) Format the query field with highlighting, identation, colors and make possible to even resize the font size. .

    3) Allow intellisense to get [table].[field] list (in A2013 we have it in Query Designer but no in SQL mode)

    4) Split the window in SQL Query and result pane - and make it possible to see result in table or text format (like we have in SQL Server).…

  6. Please update the look and feel of Desktop forms and controls

I have not found an alternative to developing in Access for creating custom desktop software for small businesses. All of the other options require 2-3 times the development time for the same functionality.

The forms and controls in Access Desktop need a facelift. Its been quite a while since you've done anything with them. Please update them.

  7. Zoom ... Design View for Forms/Reports and Form View, Report View

It would be really nice to ZOOM the Design View for forms and reports ... and also Form View, with a slider.

For example, Print Preview has a zoom slider in the lower right.

Also, Report View should be able to interpret Ctrl-Mousewheel since so it can really be more like a web page

  8. Enable seamless integration with Excel objects

In light of the items requesting return of Pivot*** objects (https://access.uservoice.com/forums/319956-access-desktop-application/suggestions/10284183-add-pivot-charts-back-to-access) being rejected, I want to suggest an alternative that I hope is much simpler to implement and would bring better experience:

Ability to seamlessly embed Excel objects, be they tables, charts, pivotcharts, pivottables, directly inside Access.

This already exists but it is very awkward, outdated, and includes unwanted things (e.g. Excel's chrome, the spreadsheet itself and so forth). This solution should allow us to define an Excel object using Access data and show it as if it was just a normal Access control. It should allow us…

  9. Better integration with SQL Server Azure

Web app are too limited to build any kind of complex solution, but Access 2013 web apps are built on SQL Server Azure which is pretty solid. Leverage the relationship with Azure and add features to the existing desktop apps so that they play nicer with Azure databases. Things like the ability to create an Azure databases from within Access, an easy way to upsize existing MDB/ACCDB tables, a native AutoComplete control, etc.

The best part of this is you can monetize it from the start. You need a way for people to create a small sample database for free…

  10. Switch between objects with Ctrl + Tab

In previous versions of Access it was possible to switch between objects with Ctrl + Tab. Please reactivate this feature. Strg + F6 is not an ergonomic shortcut.

  11. Allow Update of Linked Excel Worksheet

The patent preventing this was taken out in the early 1990s so it should have extinguished by now.

Given that this would make Excel much easier to use for charting, which Access no longer has, it would seem time to re-implement this ability.

Preferably with better control over column data types.

  12. Please allow users to disable the hyperlink popup that says "Some files can contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer..."

Please allow for users to suppress this popup, it's an incredible annoyance when you have to click it hundreds of times a day.

  13. New Event: 'On Access Application Window Close'.

This event must have a Cancel option also.
This would be an Application Level event (not a Form event).

Many developers have requested this over the years.
More often than not, you want to check some conditions before a user closes Access
Of course, there are various workarounds, but we should not have to bother with workarounds, as well as additiona workarounds to deal with potential issues when Access is closing.

Most all professional applications have this. For example (only), when you click the X to Close Quickbooks Pro, a prompt occurs asking "Are you sure you want to exit?"

  14. Checkbox Alignment

When creating forms and reports, checkboxes should be centered in the space, not aligned at the upper left

  15. GIVE US BACK A VBA SOURCE CONTROL OPTION

If IT managers are to EVER consider Access & VBA as a worthwhile part of the enterprise development picture, then serious attention needs to be made to allow for source control of Access apps - BOTH for desktop and AWA "sides". Macros need a MUCH better (XML) editor and source control options too. Hell, for "lite"/quick & dirty approaches, why isnt' there a way to have Access create its own "source control database" on the fly? After all, Jet/Ace is a database engine, right? so why not make it able to create its own source control database and store code.macro…

  16. Add a suffix to copies of objects instead of the prefix 'Copy of '.

When a copy of an object is made, 'Copy of ' is added to the front of its name, separating it from the original when sorted alphabetically. It would be much easier to find the copy in relation to the original if a suffix was used instead. That way it would be right after the original object when sorted alphabetically.

  17. Who is using the Database?

On a shared network with a backend/frontend configuration, (or even in a single-shared-file arrangement), please provide a tool that tells us who has the database open.

  18. Linked Table Options

When Linking Tables, initially and in the LinkedTable Manager, it would be nice to:

    1) Expand the dialog box !!!! Many table names are too long to see
    2) have an optional textbox to optionally preface the name in Access with something
(as the SourceTableName and Name are 2 different properties)

    3) skip tables with errors and continue linking with all in the list -- leave the problem tables checked

    thank you

  19. Create and promote a website for Access developers to list their applications and services.

MS already has a website for Access MVP's, but other ISV's, VAR's and developers who are not MVP's need a centralized place for consumers to search for a solutions provider. MS can provide a disclaimer on this website stating they're not responsible or endorsing any particular listing.

.. And while you're at it, create a separate category or page for "Access Marketing" ideas so that we don't have to mix these kinds of ideas with product improvements.

Thanks for posting and for the interesting conversation.

Without taking an active part in this discussion, or making a corporate statement, I’ll just say that the Access team values our MVPs and their on-going contribution to both the product team and the broader community.

as for Frank’s suggestion – it’s a great one, and we’ll look into it. Thanks!

  20. Provide these 3 basic native controls (slider, spinner, and progress bar)

I believe these are 3 basic controls that Access developers need. By having these controls, we will be able to build interfaces more user friendly and won't have to deal with portability issues we encounter with mscomctl.ocx and Access x64.
